Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR)

Brighter Tails is a nonprofit organization dedicated to humane community cat care, supporting Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs through collaboration, education, and innovative tools like TallyKat™.

Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is the most humane and effective way to manage community cat populations. Cats are humanely trapped, spayed or neutered and vaccinated by a veterinarian, then returned to their outdoor colony. Because the cats can no longer reproduce, colony populations stabilize and gradually decline while the cats themselves live healthier lives.

Many colonies are cared for by dedicated community members who provide food, shelter, and monitoring. At Brighter Tails, we support responsible TNR programs and provide tools like TallyKat to help communities track colonies and coordinate care.

Why TNR Works

When cats are spayed or neutered, they can no longer reproduce, preventing new litters.

Vaccinations and sterilization help cats live healthier lives and reduce the spread of disease.

Sterilized cats fight less, roam less, and create calmer, more stable colonies.

How Brighter Tails Supports TNR

Brighter Tails supports humane Trap-Neuter-Return programs by providing tools, resources, and partnerships that help communities manage and care for outdoor cat colonies.

Colony Tracking with TallyKat

Brighter Tails developed TallyKat, a data-driven tool that helps communities track colony locations, monitor cat populations, and coordinate TNR efforts more effectively.

Community Resource Programs

Through our Community Resource Programs, Brighter Tails works to support TNR organizations and caregivers with financial assistance for veterinary care, supplies, and emergency needs.

Local TNR Support

Brighter Tails directly supports TNR efforts locally in Tennessee, with our pilot-program in Unicoi County, to humanely manage community cat colonies.
